Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS), which also include the networking and digitalization of vehicles and infrastructure, are considered to be one of the essential puzzle pieces for realizing safe, efficient and sustainable transportation in the context of future mobility. The EU-funded C-Roads initiative, under whose umbrella pilot projects are being carried out in numerous European countries, is dedicated to the rollout of harmonized C-ITS services.

After the successful completion of the C-Roads Germany – Urban Nodes project at the end of 2024, the Dresden pilot and Fraunhofer IVI will continue seamlessly: the next project phase, in which further C-ITS services are to be implemented, begins this month. At the same time, three new pilots have been welcomed into the C-Roads Germany family: the cities of Hannover, Frankfurt am Main and Kaiserslautern. A joint kick-off is planned for February 2025.

In the Dresden C-Roads Germany 3 pilot, Fraunhofer IVI is responsible for the conception, testing and evaluation of the implemented C-ITS services. These include, among others, the TSP service for prioritizing public transport and emergency vehicles, as well as the EVA service for warning of emergency vehicles. Services like these are intended to make mobility in Dresden not only more efficient, but above all safer. To this end, Fraunhofer IVI and the state capital Dresden are working closely with their associated partners, including the State Office for Roads and Transportation (LASuV), Autobahn GmbH, a company of the German federal government, the Dresden fire department and the municipality of Bannewitz fire department.
