Fraunhofer "Cognitive Agriculture" Flagship Project

Smart Farming: Working with Fraunhofer towards the highly efficient, sustainable agriculture of the future

COGNAC project presentation

Within the Fraunhofer "Cognitive Agriculture" Flagship Project (in short: "COGNAC"), eight Fraunhofer Institutes carried out joint research into the foundations of future sustainable and productive agriculture. Fraunhofer IVI was one of the three core institutes and was responsible for the following key topics:

  • Development of a light-weight and fully electric field robot unit
    (drone + autonomously driving platform)
  • Design of the charging infrastructure
  • Path planning for automated processes such as field cultivation and charging procedure
  • Digital data space specifically for agriculture

Intelligent weed control using the CERES field robot

CERES Field robot

Automating field work with the help of robots allows the continuous and locally resolved acquisition of sensor data which can then be used for optimizing agricultural work processes. For this purpose, Fraunhofer IVI developed the CERES field robot (Cognitive Electrical Robot Environment System) within the COGNAC project. It features a fully electric drivetrain and can be used to demonstrate the "chemical-free weed control" use case.
