In the Saxony and Thuringia regions, experts from industry and science are carrying out research into innovative control systems for agriculture within the "Feldschwarm® ÖkoSystem" (field swarm ecosystem) RUBIN business alliance.

New electronic control systems and data technology will allow future farmers to cultivate fields by using multiple agricultural machines and modern farming robots simultaneously. Through the parallel execution of harmonized work processes, the quality and efficiency of field work will increase significantly. As a result, land can be cultivated more quickly and fewer staff is needed. This provides a sustainable solution for the growing shortage of skilled workers in agriculture.

In the project, Fraunhofer IVI is responsible for the following topics:

  • Control system in the form of an open platform for highly automated mission planning based on the helyOS® framework
  • Safety and security of the machine network

Within the former Innovative Regional Growth Center Feldschwarm®, which was funded by the then Federal Ministry for Education and Research, seven businesses and four research institutions pooled their expertise to jointly develop basic technologies for autonomous field units for resource-efficient agriculture. These include:

  • Development of automated self-driving work machinery for light field work
  • Establishment of basic concepts for operating field swarms and controlling swarms on fields
  • Development and testing of an operating and control system (helyOS®) for operating and controlling swarms
  • Testing of the simultaneous deployment and operation of multiple automated work machines
