Battery System Development

Cell Testing and Characterization

The performance and reliability of currently available battery systems depends to a large degree on the quality of the integrated cells. However, because of the multitude of different battery systems on the market, it is difficult to determine which of the systems is most suitable for the desired application.

The Fraunhofer IVI supports its clients in the search for high-quality cells for each of their respective applications. The institute can rely on many years of experience in this field and is equipped with commercial measuring systems. In addition, the researchers have developed their own specific testing plans. With the help of all of these features, the electric and thermal behavior of the desired cells can be characterized according to the clients’ requirements.

Equipment

  • 1-1 channel cell characterization using individual testing plans and high-precision measurements for parameter estimation (voltage range, current, temperature)
  • 2-12 channel cell characterization (BasyTec) in a range of 0-5 V, currents of 300 A maximum and temperatures of -40 °C to 180 °C
  • 3-1 channel module test stand (parameter)
  • 4-1 channel system test stand (parameter)
  • 2 channels for impedance spectroscopy

Range of Services

  • Development of an individual testing process designed for the specific application of the cells under testing (e. g., exposure to any number of drive cycles, continuous charging and discharging or pulse charging)
  • Definition of relevant measured variables (e. g., voltage, capacitance, temperature, internal resistance, impedance)
  • Development of a schedule giving a transparent outline of the time required for the individual tests
  • Execution and accompaniment of the measuring campaigns
  • Evaluation, documentation and discussion of the results measured
